I’m currently at our Hawaiian vacation home, where I am spending most of the summer. Every year, I plan on getting a lot of work done while I’m here, and every year I fail miserably. There is always a beach to go to (Waimea yesterday), a book to read (I’ve finished four and have started two more), or a new restaurant to try (the last one was Banyans Craft Kitchen & Lounge). Unfortunately, this has also been the theme of 2025 in general. There is always so much to do that distracts me from completing my goals.
I had no intention of writing this post, but Heather’s recent article made me feel obligated to face (and share) how lazy I’ve been and motivated to work harder in the second half of the year. Thanks, Heather. So, here is my half-year goal update.
For 2025, I set business, financial, and personal goals. If you don’t remember them, click this link for the original article. And don’t feel bad. I had to remind myself as well.
Business Goals
Sell A Business
I made it a goal to sell a business this year. I have considered selling one of our single-provider primary care clinics for a while. The same NP has successfully run it for the last 8 years, and it was always my intention to eventually sell him the practice. For a variety of reasons, that time has come.
At the start of the year, I was busy integrating the urgent care clinics we bought last year into our ecosystem. Now that things are running relatively smoothly, I can focus on making this sale a reality.
Grow BBM
Heather and I would like to grow Business Is The Best Medicine as we believe in our goal of teaching medical professionals personal finance and business. My goals for 2025 included attending one conference, publishing a guest post on another blog, writing more about business, completing the book I’ve been working on, and becoming bolder and taking more chances with the blog.
I haven’t attended a conference, and with my schedule for the second half of the year, it’s doubtful I’ll attend one. I have already written a guest post aimed at a particular site, but I need to proofread, edit, and submit it. I have also found another blog that accepts guest posts, so I will try to complete another one before year’s end. While I have worked on the book, I am only about halfway done. It is a long shot that I will complete it by the end of the year, but not impossible. I have failed miserably at writing about business and will have to work harder at this goal.
Grow UC Company
I planned to integrate the UC clinics we purchased, renovate the new locations, assimilate their operations, and grow volume, all of which has been done. While I can’t take credit for much of the work, it still falls under my purview.
The goal to identify a location or market for expansion in 2026 is complete. We have found a new site in an upcoming shopping center that would be perfect for a new clinic. While not a new market, there is massive growth happening in this area. Whether or not we will lease the property and build a new clinic remains to be seen, but this specific goal has been accomplished.

Financial Goals
My financial goals revolved around simplifying my life and bulletproofing my finances. The first step in streamlining my business life is to sell the primary care clinic I mentioned above. The next step is to find a property manager for a multi-tenant commercial property that is giving me problems. I don’t mind the rent collection and bookkeeping duties, but the property is old, and I dislike dealing with maintenance issues. Answering emails and making calls to plumbers and other service providers is an activity that really drains my energy. I just hate doing it. I have not been able to find a full-service property local property manager, but I believe I can find someone to deal with the maintenance requests. If I can complete these two tasks by year’s end, it will go a long way towards making my life easier.
I have accumulated millions of dollars of debt, and my goal was to start reducing it in 2025. We sold our old house in Austin at the beginning of the year. I planned to use the proceeds to pay off the new mortgage, but I had a larger tax bill from 2024 than I anticipated and used some of the money for taxes. However, I have still paid an extra $330,000 towards our new mortgage as of July 1. I plan to continue to make additional payments for the rest of the year whenever I receive business distributions. I likely won’t get the mortgage paid off this year, but I am on track to significantly reduce debt.
Personal Goals
Be Consistent
My goal was to be consistent at working out for the entire year, exercising at least 3 times per week for 50 weeks of the year. I also wanted to work out at least 200 days during 2025.
As of July 1, I have worked out at least three times every week this year, making it 18 months that I have been working out consistently in this pattern. I have worked out a total of 126 times in these six months. I have put on about 10 lbs of muscle this year, mainly from forcing myself to eat more, and I feel great. My goal of being consistent and hitting 200 workouts this year is well on track.
Address Medical Issues
One of my goals was to address some lingering medical issues, which I have not done. I have not seen my primary care physician this year and haven’t seen an orthopedist about my shoulder and knee. I did see a dermatologist and had a form of skin cancer removed from my neck, so that has to count for something. However, I have a lot planned for the second half of the year, so I’m not sure I will reach this goal.
Conclusion
At the start of this article, I felt like I had been lazy and non-productive thus far in 2025. However, now that I’ve formally reviewed my goals, I don’t feel as bad. While not perfect, I’m on track to complete most of the goals.
Performing this mid-year check-in has been productive. It reminded me of the things I wanted to accomplish and has shown me that I need to focus during the back half of the year if I want to get them done. So, for now, with a renewed sense of purpose and drive, I’m going to go back to the beach. Or on a hike. Or go eat some fish tacos. But later, I’m going to get back to work on these goals. Pinky swear.
